Why Does the Type of Vegetable Garden Matter?

Deciding that type of vegetable garden you want to start is key. You need to decide the area you’re going to work with, the type of tools you will need based on that type of garden, and so much more! When deciding what type of vegetable garden you will start make sure you take into account the amount of room you have, the sun exposure, and your own physical abilities to tend the garden as well.

Focus on starting small and with a vegetable, you actually eat too! Keep in mind it does take time for sprouting, buds, and the actual veggies time to grow so be patient! Work with the area you do have and don’t stress about it being the best it can be right now.

Time to Choose a Type of Garden!

Raised Vegetable Garden Beds

Raised Gardens are best for those that may not be able to reach down to the ground as much as needed to grow a vegetable garden. It’s also perfect for those that may not have the best soil to grow vegetables in (some areas have red clay etc that won’t be suitable for growth). You can range from having a leveled raised garden bed to just one that sits above the ground below it, it’s all up to you!

A few things to keep in mind if using a Raised Garden Bed:

  • You need 8-12 inches of depth
  • You will have fewer weeds but still, need to keep an eye on them
  • You will still need soil to line the bottom of your raised gardening bed.

Potted Vegetable Gardens

If you live in an apartment or other small space you might not actually have a yard to plant it. That’s where potted gardens come in! You are essentially starting from scratch and you can’t grow as much as quick BUT it’s still a start.

Here are some easier to grow plants that thrive in pots:

  • Tomatoes
  • Kale
  • Peppers
  • Onions

A few things you need to know about potted gardens:

  • You will need to place your plants outside to get air and sun still (not just inside the door in the sun)
  • Some vegetables will need sticks to grow along (like cucumbers)
  • You may need to get larger pots as the vegetables grow

In-Ground Vegetable Gardens

An In-ground Garden is the classic in the yard garden. You will need to ready the area by pulling weeds and tilling the dirt to get it ready to plant in. Make sure if you’re doing a larger area you make paths so you don’t step on the seeds/plants as they grow.

Things you should know about in-ground gardens:

  • There will be weeds and pests from the ground that need to be handled
  • The plants can get water from the dirt and surrounding areas after rainfalls
  • You will need to rotate areas every year to allow the dirt to revitalize.
